Documentary SVOD service iwonder launches on iflix
Documentary and current affairs VOD service iwonder has launched its branded channel on Southeast Asian SVOD platform iflix.
iwonder will be made available to iflix’s more than 12 million users across 28 global markets beginning today (June 28).
The channel’s launch line-up will grow in the coming weeks to offer premium documentary feature films, and will further expand to include television series and current affairs programming.
Anchoring iwonder’s launch slate Nick Broomfield‘s Biggie and Tupac (2002), which attempts to uncover the two rap star’s murders; Alex Winter‘s Deep Web (2015), an in-depth look at the alleged creator of the online black market, Silk Road;and Nanfu Wang’s Hooligan Sparrow (2016), which seeks justice against an elementary school principal who abused six girls.
Also included are Steve James‘ seminal documentary Hoop Dreams (1994); Amy Berg‘s archival doc Janis (2015); Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady‘s Jesus Camp (2006); Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg’s Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010); Nick Broomfield’s Kurt and Courtney (1998); Chris Paine’s Revenge of the Electric Car (2011); Emer Reynolds’ The Farthest (2017); Brian Knappenberger‘s The Internet’s Own Boy (2014); and Anthony Baxter‘s You’ve Been Trumped (2011).
The Singapore-based iwonder’s partnership with iflix is the company’s first step towards a wider international roll-out of its standalone SVOD service, which is expected to launch in September this year. The platform will initially launch direct to consumers in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, before rolling out to English-speaking Europe and Canada in 2019, according to iwonder co-founder Mark Bridges.
iwonder is said to use a proprietary algorithm that identifies and licenses a selection of the most popular and best-reviewed documentaries in order to curate its content collection. The firm will also soon announce partnerships with leading global news organizations that will offer up-to-the-minute current affairs programming, says Bridges.
“iwonder’s mission is to personalize the discovery experience and connect audiences of all ages to great stories that both inform and entertain,” said James Bridges (pictured), iwonder’s co-founder and CEO, in a statement. “Our partnership with iflix is the launch pad for this goal.”
“iflix is dedicated to offering our audiences the broadest range of world-class content available,” added Mark Britt, co-founder and group CEO of iflix. “We are in the Golden Age of content, where entertainment and culture create brilliant, compelling stories in both fact and fiction. iwonder supports our data-driven strategies and brings an exceptional slate of factual content to our platform.”
